A Cool Trick in Windows 7

I just learned a cool new trick in Windows 7 and thought that I would share it. It is called ‘God Mode’ and I suppose was suppose to be a secret, but the secret somehow leaked out. Basically what this does is creates a secret folder that contains all the controls that can be changed or manipulated by the admin user all combined in one place. I don’t think that this is like the ‘Super User’ in Linux. It’s just that it places all the controls into one folder, which makes it easier to administer Windows 7 from just one link. It is really easy to do, just create a folder somewhere on your harddrive (I chose the desktop), and rename it to:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
and when you do, it’s icon will change from a folder to the ‘God Mode’ icon that you can see in this photo:

When you open the ‘God Mode’ folder, this is what you will see:

From this folder you will have access to Action Center tools which includes things like user account control settings. You will also have access to administrative tools, backup and restore, credential manager, date and time settings, default program settings, device manager, devices and printers, display settings, folder options, fonts, settings for internet explorer, network and sharing center, performance information and tools, program settings, account settings, and much more. So try out God Mode in Windows 7 if you like to have one central location for all of the administration options.

How to Improve the Quality of Your Images with Photoshop

If you use your digital camera for photography and also use Photoshop for editing images or creating graphics, then you can improve the quality of your digital photos with a few simple steps in Photoshop. So lets assume that you take a picture on a cloudy, fall day and the lighting is not so great. So that the photo is dark and the detail is difficult to see. Your picture could look something like this:

Well with Photoshop you can make this dull looking digital photograph look great with a few easy steps. So first open this photo up in Photoshop. Now to make it a little brighter with better lighting and better contrast, select Image->Adjustments->and then brightness/contrast from the menu. You will see a dialog box with two slider controls, one for the brightness and one for the contrast. For this photo I first increased the brightness a little and then also increased the contrast just a bit. And here is the result of this first round of improvements:

This digital photograph certainly looks better than the original low-light dull photo. But I think it can be improved still even more. So I select Image->adjustments->brightness/contrast once again and increase the brightness a little bit more and I also increase the contrast a little bit more as well. The more I play with the adjustments the more of a feel I can get for how the photo really should look and once I have what I feel are the correct settings, I save the image again. Here is the final result:

This looks so much better than the dull, low-light original digital photo, don’t you agree? So there you have it, a very easy way to improve the quality of your digital photographs with Photoshop. I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and that it helps you out.

A Breif Review of Windows 8 by Shane Zentz

Windows 8 Contains some New Features along with Familiar Windows Features

The first thing I noticed when first using Windows 8 was the new Tiled Start Screen. This is a little unusual in an Operating System and was a little unexpected, but after using it for a while I found it intuitive and kind of cool. At first I was at a loss as to how to find the traditional desktop, and I suspect that a lot of Windows users will have the same experience. Once I figured out how to get to the traditional desktop, I felt like I was using Windows Operating System again. Except for one thing. Where is the Start Button? Try as I might I could not find the Start Button. I have to admit that this is one feature of Windows 8 that I really don’t like, and I think that it is a mistake to leave out the Start Button that all Windows users will expect (and want) to see. Once you get past the missing start button and the new way of getting to applications and the new way of doing tasks in Windows, there are some cool new features that are worth a mention.

One cool feature is that now Windows 8 comes with anti-virus software built in. This used to be called ‘Windows Defender’ and in the past it had to be manually installed by the user, but now it is installed by default. This is really a good feature that any Windows user will appreciate. Another new feature is the Windows App Store, where Windows users can get both free and paid Windows Apps. I have to admit that I haven’t spent that much time looking through the App Store but I would assume that most popular Windows Applications could be easily found and installed through the App Store. I will post an update to this post when I have more time to check this Windows App Store out.

Another feature of Windows 8 that sounds promising is the ‘One Click Restore’ feature, which is now called a ‘Refresh’. This is just like the ‘Restore’ function of previous versions of Windows, except that now it can be performed in just ‘One Click’. Also ‘Windows Explorer’ has been redisigned, but still functions much the same as all the previous versions of Windows Explorer, but it does look better.

Windows 8 has promised performance increases which I would welcome and I think that most Windows users would like as well. The better start up times and shut down times are something that Windows has needed for a long time. Both Mac OS and any version of Linux OS will blow older versions of Windows away when it comes to start up times and shut down times, but Windows 8 should be faster. I noticed a slight increase in start up and shut down times, but not anything like what has been promised.

Overall, I like some of the new features of Windows 8 and I am taking a wait and see attitude to see if it will live up to the hype and expectations. I still feel the need to complain about the lack of the traditional start button on the desktop, but all in all there are some cool new features in Windows 8.

How to Password Protect a Form or Report in Access

Microsoft makes doing a lot of things with databases very easy. And password protecting a form or report is no exception. With just a few lines of code in the right place you can prevent unwanted users from opening and viewing or editing data in your form or report. Just as an aside, this is not the most secure method and in fact is not really secure at all. But in order for someone to find the password (which is hard-coded into the application) they would have to have at least basic knowledge of access from the design and programming point of view, so if they are just users then chances are that they will never discover the password (by looking at the code behind the program) unless someone tells it to them or they discover it written down somewhere. Having said that, this method is still pretty useful for just average applications, like I said it is not really the most secure method, so if your application contains really sensitive data (like social security numbers or bank account numbers) then I would advise using another more secure method. But if you just need a basic password protection to protect just one or a few forms from average users then this method will work and it is also quick and very easy. So read on to see how this is done.

Open the form or report that you want to password protect in design view and find ‘form’ in the properties field (see photo 1). Then switch to the events tab. Under the events tab you will see a field called ‘on load’ (see photo 1), this is the field that controls what the form or report does when it is first loaded or opened. Here we want to add some code to the on load event so that it will first prompt the user for a password. So click on the tiny icon with the three little dots on it and on the window that pops up, select ‘code builder’. This will bring up a Visual Basic window (see photo 2) which will have a method for the ‘onload’ event preloaded. All we need to do is to add the code to this section.

 

Here is the code:

Save the code and exit and also save the changes to the form. Now try to open the form and you will get a password box before the form will open. If you enter the correct password then it will open, otherwise it will not. Another thing I should mention is that the text for the password is not dotted out or starred out like is usually is with password protection forms. I think that this can be changed but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial.
This code is pretty basic. To use this you will need to change the line that says “whatever password you choose here” to whatever you want the password to be. And then change the “name of the form that you want to password protect” to the name of your form. Now, you can change “Enter Password” to whatever message you want to appear when the password box comes up, and likewise, you can change the “Wrong Password?” part to whatever message that you want to display when the user enters the wrong password or does not enter any password at all.
So there you have it, a pretty easy and basic password protection system to password protect a form or report in Microsoft access. This will work with just about any version of Access, so give it a try. Just remember that this is not really completely secure becuase anyone who knows how can just look at the form in design view and then check the ‘onload’ event code to discover the hard-coded password, but the average user will never know how to do this anyway, so this is a reasonably decent solution.

How to Create a Basic 'TEST' Database in Access

This tutorial covers how to create a ‘test’ database in Access 2010. You might say, why create a test database? Well, the answer is that sometimes it is much easier to start with a simple database with only a few tables and forms to see how your project will work when it is scaled to a much larger level. The main reason is simplicity and testing. Testing and coding is always much easier when working on a smaller scale. If you are familiar with programming then you know that it is easier to code one small module (or function, or method) at a time instead of trying to write the whole program line by line. It is the same principle here. So if you have a project to do in access, whether large or small, hard or easy, for work or school, then this tutorial will show you how to quickly set up a test database in Access 2010.

Let’s say, just for an example, that your project involves a large amount of data and data sets, but you are currently stuck on a certain relationship between two tables or a design problem between two tables or a programming issue between two tables. Then instead of working with a large set of data and tables (and queries, relationships, modules, ect.) it may be easier to just create two example tables that are at least similar to the ones that you are currently stuck on, and then add a little bit of test data just to work with. This should be easier than working within your complex project and then when you have the problem solved or have a worked out solution, it will be much easier to just import that solution into your project.
So for this lets assume that you are stuck on some problem that exists between one table which contains customer data and another table which contains data for a business. In this scenario, I would create a simple access test database with only two tables. The tables will be called ‘customer’ and ‘business’ to keep it pretty simple. And the tables will have the expected data fields to go with them as well. So the first step is to open access and create the two tables:

And add all the necessary fields, but remember that this is just a test so there is no need to add each and every field, we just want some example data to work with and we still want to keep it pretty simple to make it easier to work with.

Then, once you have the two tables and the data fields that correspond to those tables, now it is time to add some ‘test’ data. Just make up a few customers and a few businesses, in this case. Now we have our test database set up and we are ready to solve our problem.
Is it a relationship problem?

Is it a design problem?

Is it a module/coding problem?

As you can see it is sometimes easier and beneficial to just create a simple test database to solve a problem that would be more difficult to solve on a larger scale, then import the solution into the more complex project. So I hope that this advice will help with your next access database project or assignment.

How to Create a Switchboard (or Splash) Screen in Access 2010 by Shane Zentz

When creating a database application in Access 2010, you will sometimes come accross a situation where you will want to present several options to the end-user to choose from. For example you may have one form for data entry and one report, or you may have several forms and reports. This is where the idea of the ‘switchboard’ or ‘splash screen’ comes in. This handy switchboard can be used to present several choices for the end user to choose from. So this is what this tutorial is all about. And this is only the first part. In this part we will create the switchboard or splash screen (which will display as a pop up window when the user opens the database file), but in the next part of this we will fill the switchboard with photos and clickable (usable) buttons which will open forms and reports. So open up Access 2010 and get ready to create a switchboard!

The first step is simple. Just create a new form in design view. Resize the area to your liking and then click on the ‘other’ tab in the form’s properties. Change where it says ‘pop up’ from no to yes. Now switch to the format tab of the form’s properties. On this tab you will want to change ‘record selectors’ and ‘navagation buttons’ to NO and also set ‘control box’ and ‘close button’ to NO, and finally set min and max buttons to ‘NONE’. Now save your form and switch to display view. You should just see an empty window with no record selectors and no min,max,or close buttons, just like this:

OK, if you have something that looks like that then you are on your way. So close this switchboard out (right click somewhere in the popup window and select close). Now lets make this switchboard open automatically when this database is opened. To do that just go to the File tab and from there select the options tab towards the bottom, which will open up the database’s properties window, like this:

On the “current database” tab, you can set the title for the switchboard and even select an icon for the database itself. Just below those options is the one that will open the form when the database is opened. It says “Display Form” and you can select any form that you created in your database. The form that you select will open automatically when the database is opened. So choose the form that you just created, pick a title for it, then save these settings.

 

Close the database and reopen it. And when you do you should see the (blank) switchboard that we created earlier.

Not much here, just an empty window, but you can add whatever title you want and whatever graphics or photos to the background, and of course buttons to open forms or data entry. So this is just the starting point. Check the Switchboard’s properties add photos and other funcionalities to it.

Just be aware that you can even set this switchboard to open after a certain interval (or close after a certain interval) with some of the forms properties. But that is a little beyond this tutorial, but if you are interested in this just google it man.

O.k., next we will add some real functionability to this switchboard and even decorate it a little to make it look even nicer. So check back for part two of this tutorial.

Resize a Batch of Photos using Photoshop

If your camera is anything like mine, a Sony DSC-W330, it takes great pictures but the size is way too big. And if you need to resize your photos to post on the internet or to be able to more easily send them in an email, then you know that it can take a long time to resize the photos. And it is even worse if you have a large batch of photos. Well there is a ‘batch photo resize’ function built into photoshop which makes this previously time consuming process way easier and way faster. I have to say that this process works perfectly with my sony camera which normally takes pictures at 4320 x 3240 pixels, way too large for most applications. When I use the function in photoshop that I am going to describe it only takes a few minutes (or even a few seconds) depending on the number of images in the batch. And I usually resize the images to 800 x 600 pixels. This used to take me a ton of time, but then I discovered this photoshop shortcut to resize a whole batch of photos. But the best part is that it requires no user interaction, it is completely automatic. The one thing that I should mention is that I don’t think that this will work very well with a folder (or batch) of images of different sizes, but you could try it and see, because you never know, it just may work!
So, you have a batch of photos (a folder of equally sized photos from your digital camera), and you need to resize all of them, and you want a fast way of doing it? You don’t want to spend a few hours resizing them one by one? Then Photoshop to the rescue! Here is how to resize a batch of photos using photoshop.
The first step is to get all the photos you are going to resize into one folder, and like I said earlier it is best that they are all the same size. Next, open photoshop. Now go to: file and scroll down and select the ‘scripts’ sub-menu and then select “Image Processor”.

Under the first section, click on the ‘select folder’ button and find the folder of photos you need resized. Then, choose where you want the photos saved, if in the same location then select that or if in another location, then browse to that location. Now the third option is where you select save as jpeg (usually what you will need), and then the box next to it ‘resize to fit’ and the default is 800 x 600, normally a pretty good size for email and the internet. Once your settings are correct, click on run and sit back and enjoy. All you will see is the photoshop checkerboard background changing sizes for each photo in your batch, and this will be pretty fast if you only have a few photos but will take a while if you have a large number of photos. But it is completely automatic. When the show is over, navigate over to the folder you selected to save the photos in and you should see a new folder (within that folder) named ‘jpeg’ in that you will have your resized photos (and your original photos should be still intact).

How cool was that? I cannot believe how much time I wasted by resizing each image seperately. This cool photoshop function has saved me a ton of time, and hopefully it will save you time as well.

Access is a great program for small level databases. The kind of databases and programs that almost every small business today needs. And of course Microsoft makes it very easy for almost anyone to create a complete database driven solution. Simple order entry database programs are very common in todays business, and Microsoft Access makes it possible to create a viable solution reasonably quickly, efficiently, and economically. Access contains a number of features that make it the database application of choice for small businesses today. One of those features is the combo box. This tool allows the end-user to simply select an item from a drop down menu, instead of having to type it in manually. A real time saver. But from the programming and database designer point of view, they can sometimes be a little difficult and frustrating to work with. So this article is about what I have learned in working with these combo boxes, and how to succeed in your next Access project by using these handy tools.

For this article I will start with a simple and very basic table that looks like the following:
ID (autonumber primary key), Customer (text), Address (text), City (text), State (text), Zip Code (text). This is obviously a simple customer database which will hold typical customer data. The kind of data that a lot of small businesses would have and would need to store in an efficient and easy way. I am not going to go over how to create the tables in access as that is a little below the level of this article. But check out google for many articles on how to create basic tables and basic databases in any version of Access. So we assume that we have our customer table in place. And we can also assume that we have some arbitrary amount of (valid) data inserted into the table.

This data will be useful for many purposes to most small businesses. However in an effort to increase efficiency and also accuracy, it would be nice for the end-user of this database to be able to just search for the customers name and then all of the data related to that particular customer would then be displayed in the correct fields. This is possible with access and combo boxes. In fact there are at least two ways of doing this. The harder way and the easier way. The harder way involves adding some simple code to the combo boxes ‘after update’ property. Usually something like TextBox151=ComboBox9.Column(2). This method certainly works, but there is an even easier (and cleaner) method of accomplishing this with no code at all. So now we know what we want, we want to auto fill fields of a form or report based on the value chosen by the end user in a combo box. Read on to learn the easy way to achieve this.

Recall that we have our simple ‘Customer’ table and that it is filled with some kind of data (even test data is fine). So what we want is a form that will display that data. This is very easy in Access, but we want more. We want a combo box that will only display the customers name, and when the end user selects a certain customers name the rest of the data for that customer (address, city, state, etc.) will automatically fill the fields of the form. So here is the easy way to do this. The tricky way. First open the customer table (in this case, your table will probably be named differently) in datasheet view. With this table open, go to the ‘Create’ tab. Now on the ‘Create’ tab, you have three choices for creating a form (or possibly even more). But the first choice simply says ‘form’. This is the one that we want.

So select this choice and you will see Access will create a neat looking form that has every field of the table (Customer, in this case) that was used to create it. Now you can close out the customer table. Go to the form that Access created when you clicked on the ‘form’ button. Switch to design view. Try to make some room somewhere on the form to add the combo box. Then select the combo box tool on the ‘Design’ tab and place the combo box somewhere on this form.

 

A wizard will open. If you have added combo boxes in other places you will notice that if you use this method of adding a combo box, now you have a third option of where to get the data for the combo box from. And this new option (the bottom one) which says something like “Find a record on my form based on the value I selected from combo box”, is exactly the one that we want.

So select that and choose something logical to fill the combo box, in this case I would choose Customer (the name of the customer, to make it easy for the end user to find who they are looking for). Now save the form and switch back to form view. Test it out. You should see that when you select a customers name, then their corresponding data is automatically filled in to the other fields of the form. Like magic.

If this has not worked for you, then you have probably missed a step listed above. The most important things are to make sure that Access makes a form for you based on the table that you want to pull the data from, and that you choose the third option in the combo box wizard (the one that says something like “Find a record on my form based on the value I selected from combo box”. If these steps are followed then your form should be autofillingout itself based on the end users choice in the combo box. Now what you do with this data and this form are up to you. And remember that this is only one method of accomplishing this little bit of magic. If this does not work for you or does not suit your needs, then I would recomend trying the method which involves adding a bit of code to the ‘after update’ event on the combo box. So you want to add headlights to a photo of a vehicle using photoshop? This (short) tutorial will show you how easy this is with photoshop filters. First you will need a photo of some kind of vehicle, a car, a truck, a motorcycle, or whatever. Here is a generic photo of a corvette with the headlights off. So open your photo in photoshop and lets get to work!

Staying on the main layer with the photo (or make a copy of the layer with the image if you want to keep the original image with the headlights off), select the filter menu and find the ‘render’ submenu. From there select ‘Lens Flare’.

This will open the image in a dialog box with a black crosshair indicating where the light should be rendered.

Simply move the crosshair to where the headlight should be, or double click on the headlight area to move the crosshair there. Now you can play with the settings to get the shade and intensity of light that you want. You can even get a xenon light effect with the right settings. Once you are satisified with the settings and location of the first light, click ok to save the change. Then simply repeat the above step to add the second headlight (and keep repeating if you need more lights – like driving lights/fog lights, etc.) but keep the same settings so that the two headlights will be a match. Again save that change and see the result. Cool, right! Here is the final result:
